An IUD is a small T-shaped intrauterine device that is made up of soft plastic and copper which prevents pregnancy for up to 10 years. It is a non-hormonal, reversible contraceptive method that is 99.9% effective. It is inserted into the uterus only by a trained health care provider. IUDs work primarily by disrupting sperm mobility and damaging sperm, acting as a spermicide within the uterus. IUDs increase levels of copper ions, prostaglandins, and white blood cells within the uterine and tubal fluids, which inhibit sperm mobility and viability, preventing sperm from traveling through the cervical mucus.
